All beds and mattresses used as contract furniture are legally required to comply with Source 5 (also known as Crib 5) regulations.
"Source 5" refers to the test carried out as part of British Standard (BS) 7177, which is a flame retardant test.
Source/Crib 5 Explained
British Standards (BS) legally require that domestic furniture passes the following tests:
- BS EN 5971 (Smouldering cigarette test)
- BS EN 5972 (Match resistant test)
Contract furniture is additionally required to pass the following test:
- BS 6807 (Flame retardant test) (Commonly referred to as Source/Crib 5)
This is the minimum standard of fire resistance for contract furniture, and covers the United Kingdom, Irish Republic and Northern Ireland.
Often, flame retardant fabrics and textiles are treated and/or manufactured differently to make them naturally more resistant to fire.
